This chapter summarizes epidemiological studies on the prevalence of alcoholism in older adults, as well as the diagnostic challenges presented by this population. It describes the service delivery network, and considers the role of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). It argues that the service delivery system is ill-equipped to meet the needs of older adults who suffer from substance use disorders and calls for professional education to alert social workers in all settings to the signs of these problems.
