Over the past two decades, considerable effort has been devoted to documenting the experiences of family caregivers of frail elders, in particular those with Alzheimer's disease. Researchers have more recently begun to focus on special populations of caregivers. The first section of this chapter reviews the general research on caregivers to older adults using Pearlin and his colleagues' stress process model as a framework for organizing this literature. The second section explores special populations of caregivers, specifically male caregivers, end-of-life caregivers, and aging parents as caregivers to adults with disabilities.
