White Collar Zen

Steven Heine

Oxford University Press

This introductory chapter first sets out the focus of the book, which is not about but from Zen—it adapts traditional ideals and styles of training to the goal of improving interpersonal relations in the professional sphere. It explains how to present yourself more effectively to the outside world by unifying your emotions and thoughts, cultivating a lucid, insightful, and powerful way of self-development and expression. The chapter then discusses how inspiration can be garnered from Zen with neither formal study that follows the rules of monastic life nor reclusive wandering outside the ordinary social order.
