This chapter sketches briefly the history of the intelligent design movement’s Wedge Strategy. The strategy began to take shape in the early 1990s after Phillip E. Johnson, the intelligent design movement’s founder and advisor, read Richard Dawkins’s The Blind Watchmaker and creationist Michael Denton’s Evolution: A Theory in Crisis. He came to the conclusion that the modern crisis of Christianity is reflected in large measure in the conflict between these two books. The chapter explains how Johnson assembled a following of likeminded, younger creationists who used their academic credentials to lend the strategy legitimacy. Operating in the movement’s early years as the Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture, which was established in 1996 as part of the Discovery Institute, they launched an ambitious program of fundraising, conference-holding, and publication for popular audiences. Their central goal was to attack the naturalism that forms the foundation of modern science.
