This introductory chapter begins with the story of a counterfeit scholar, Dr. Myron L. Fox, who was actually an actor hired by researchers to pose as a scholar and deliver a nonsensical lecture concerning the application of game theory to physician education. The highly educated audience of “psychiatrists, psychologists, and social-worker educators” was completely fooled by his serious demeanor and double-talk. This true story is used as an analogy to what the intelligent design creationist movement has managed to do in the United States. Having polished their image and updated their creationist jargon just enough to fool scientific laymen, the intelligent design creationist movement has made startling progress in getting a hearing in mainstream America. The chapter provides a broad overview for the more detailed discussion of the movement in the succeeding chapters.
