Glial cells rely on calcium ions to display a large variety of signaling capabilities inside the cell and among neighboring cells. These calcium activities are key to regulating not only the growth and survival of glial cells but also the communication with neurons. As glial cells are not electrically excitable, calcium signaling, specially in astrocytes, is particularly important to understand how glia regulate synaptic activity and brain function. This chapter discusses evidence for the existence of calcium signaling in glia, the different mechanisms of glial calcium signaling, its spatial and temporal resolution, and how glial cells make use of this diverse array of activities to modulate neuronal function.
