Mental disorders are likely not all explained the same way from an evolutionary perspective. The agreement over evolutionary psychiatry and its significance is limited to an acceptance of the basic model wherein at least some mental disorders are understood as failures of domain-specific modules to perform their evolutionary function. This chapter shows that different and incompatible theories can be sorted into two strategies: one that seeks to identify a once adaptive trait that is no longer adaptive; the other arguing that mental disorders are inevitable by-products of normally adaptive traits.
