Family support programs involve systemic efforts to support the psychological and social resources of family members as they respond to a continuing stressor. These programs often involve “experienced peers,” “veteran parents,” or “supporting partners” who develop relationships with target parents based on their previous experience with similar stressors or consequences. This chapter focuses on community-based support programs for families of children with serious emotional disorders. It presents the theoretical foundations for family support interventions, and then discusses various issues and parameters affecting the development, implementation, and evaluation of the family support program, Parent Connections.
