There are several ways to begin the story of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE). One is to recall the Evangelical Alliance of the 19th century, its virtual absorption and replacement by the Federal Council of Churches, and conservative evangelicals' sense of being disenfranchised. Another would be to speak of fundamentalists' earlier attempts to build a national coalition of conservative Protestants in the 1920s, notably the World's Christian Fundamentals Association. This chapter explores the NAE's roots in New England, particularly its more direct inspiration, the New England Fellowship.
