This chapter lays the foundation for the book. It explains the components of radiological assessment and discusses how these components must be undertaken in a systematic process to provide scientifically defensible estimates of dose and risk. Each component of radiological assessment is briefly described, including source terms, environmental transport, exposure factors, conversion to dose, conversion to risk, uncertainty, validation, and communication of results. Four recommendations are made that would improve the radiological assessment process. These recommendations are: make environmental data accessible, use human health risk as an endpoint, provide user-friendly risk tools, and consider public input in decisions made about risk. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how stakeholder involvement in radiological assessment could lead to a more effective assessment outcome.
