When George Gershwin plunged into the composition of Porgy and Bess in 1934, Ira Gershwin also struck out in a new artistic direction. The twin failures of Pardon My English and Let 'Em Eat Cake had been as hard on him as they had been on his brother and induced him to explore other forms of musical theater as well. Even though he was drawn into the orbit of Porgy and Bess, he found his contribution “required nowhere near the time George needed, and I was able to work on two other properties during the twenty months.” The shows Ira termed “properties,” Life Begins at 8:40 and The Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, were both “smart” 1930s revues.
