The third chapter of Country of My Skull, Antjie Krog's personal history of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), documents some of the most excruciating evidence that was put before this controversial body. It includes her account of the testimony of Nomonde Calata, the widow of one of the so-called Cradock Four, a group of young activists who were murdered by the police after brutal torture. Characteristically, Krog introduces the reader to this witness and her testimony in such a way as to foreground problems of form, language, and narration. She describes how she sat deep into the night, pondering the implications of Calata's appearance before the commission with a friend she refers to only as Professor Kondlo.
