Point estimates and confidence intervals are used to make judgments about the strength of an association between an outcome and an exposure of interest. To interpret findings, we have to take account of the influence of chance (sampling variability) on the results observed in the study sample. This chapter presents methods that help quantify the degree of uncertainty in the evaluation of a potential association.
