An operating characteristic (receiver-operating characteristic, ROC, or isosenstivity function) can be calculated whenever detection of a signal is observed under conditions that change the observer's propensity to respond positively. This chapter uses this function to understand the observer's detection process. Its form is derived from the signal-detection model, and how to calculate it from data is described.
