Tired and depressed, Mencken took a Caribbean cruise with Sara Haardt before turning his attention to the 1932 presidential elections. Initially, Mencken found the effects of the Depression greatly exaggerated. He was the product of the 1893 Depression, and of a city that weathered the economic downturn better than most. When he realized that the Depression was real, he casted his vote for Democratic presidential candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose stunning victory and action to repeal the Prohibition elicited Mencken's admiration. The chapter ends with Mencken downing the first mug of real beer, as he celebrated the return of “the essential liberties of man”.
