This chapter deals with team dynamics. Palliative care teams are subject to a number of forces, from both within and outside the team. Team members frequently feel pulled in several directions. Only by working together as a team, supporting, encouraging, and learning from one another, will the necessary sense of competence and self-confidence be maintained in order for the members to enjoy the work, grow as individuals, and provide a dynamic service. Broadly speaking, the forces acting on a team are derived from influences outside the team (environmental factors), and from interactions within the team itself (internal factors). The second part of the chapter discusses the interactions between team members, role blurring, the effect of the work on individuals within the team, leadership of a team, how to recognize and manage conflict within the team, and fulfilling the educational needs of team members.
