The process of learning involves physical as well as functional changes in the brain. Yet there is no separate structure for memory, which resides to some degree in every living cell. In the central nervous system, various structures make particular contributions to certain aspects of memory, and there is considerable localization of function for specialized forms of memory. This chapter outlines the general organization of learning and memory systems and some of the mechanisms thought to be involved.

Keywords:   learning, memory, localization, central nervous system, specialized memory, physical changes, functional changes
