The Media Battle

The Media Battle

(p.329) 35 The Media Battle
The Purse and the Sword

Daniel Friedmann

Oxford University Press

This chapter describes the flurry of media campaigns that were initiated against the author by current and former members of the Supreme Court following his appointment to the ministry of justice. While the appointment was enthusiastically received by the government and the Knesset, the Supreme Court rallied against him. Sparked by a statement made by former Deputy Chief Justice Mishael Cheshin, a media campaign meant to delegitimize him emerged. Subsequent media uproars soon followed, though they did more to damage the Supreme Court than they did the author. Criticism began to emerge against the Supreme Court and the power it had held unchecked for so long. The author, meanwhile, enjoyed considerable support, from the other two branches of the government as well as from the media and the public at large.
