Jimmy is caring for his long-term partner who suffers from depression. Jimmy—a white, 71-year-old gay man—grew up on a farm and went on to pursue a law career, which took a drastic turn when a law firm fired him after finding out he was gay. He is the eldest of this group of gay men, thus his narrative gives us a glimpse of the prevailing homophobia of the 1950s and 1970s (before the “gay” identity was dominant), the gay liberation movement, the AIDS tragedy, and life after retirement. His days involve caring, writing, reading, and biking.

Keywords:   caretaker, friendships, older gay men, same-sex marriage
