Chapter 8 is mainly descriptive. It provides a detailed account of a series of events connected with the celebration of Confucius’s birthday in 2007. The chapter starts with a description of a number of top-down initiatives: the creation of a world Confucian conference; a Confucius festival organized in a stadium in Qufu; ceremonies to honor Confucius in Qufu’s temple. This section is followed by the description of another series of phenomena that took place at the grassroots level: popular cults initiated by popular activists and the creation of a local association for the promotion of ritual culture and music
