Chapter 9 provides an analysis of phenomena described in chapter 8. It addresses the following questions: how is a post-Maoist ritual Confucianism possible? How can an official enterprise not devoid of ideological dimension coexist with a number of local initiatives claiming to be popular? What kinds of relations (coexistence, coordination, tension) can be identified between these two types of discourse and practice? And how is it possible to articulate a post-Maoist ethos claiming a Confucian identity? These issues are discussed in three sections. The first focuses on the celebration of a Confucius devoid of Confucianism; the second explores the emergence of a new minjian, or popular ritualism; and the last section discusses the complex interactions between popular and official Confucianism.

Keywords:   Confucius cult, ideology, minjian, invention of rituals, ritual specialists, official Confucianism, lineages
