This chapter discusses the first five years of the American Bible Society (ABS). The ABS moved into its first headquarters on 72 Nassau Street in New York City and began publishing and distributing Bibles. The chapter covers the relationship between the ABS as a national society, and the way it worked with its growing number of auxiliary Bible societies established throughout the country. The ABS made early efforts to reach native Americans, mariners, and anyone in the country who did not have access to the word of God. Finally, it discusses some of the early attempts by auxiliary agents to distribute the Bible “without note or comment.”
