This chapter chronicles the founding of the American Bible Society (ABS) in May 1816 in New York City. It traces the tensions with the Philadelphia Bible Society and the ABS over the establishment of a national society and chronicles the convention that established the ABS in City Hall. The ABS was founded by clergy and religious philanthropists, most of whom were affiliated in one way or another with the Federalist political party. They hoped that the ABS would be a vital force for bringing Bible-based morality to the United States. This chapter also offers brief biographical sketches of those present at the founding of the organization.
