This chapter explores the role of the American Bible Society (ABS) in Europe following World War II. It shows the way that the ABS met the needs of Germans and Russians in the wake of the war by providing them with Bibles as a way to help them rebuild after the destruction of war and to prevent the spread of communism. This chapter also extends the American idea of spreading Christian civilization in Europe and around the world. American presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower connected their attempts at containing communism in the wake of the war to the advancement of Christianity.
