This chapter explores the American Bible Society (ABS) during World War II. It starts with the ABS distribution efforts to the troops and examines the role that the ABS played on the homefront during the war. The chapter centers around Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous “four freedoms” speech and the way the ABS seized upon the speech to suggest encourage people to turn to the Bible as an antidote to “fear.”
