This chapter explores the American Bible Society (ABS) role in China in the years between 1875 and the turn of the twentieth century. The ABS was not particularly successful in China, but they did work with the British & Foreign Bible Society and the Bible Society of Scotland to help build a small indigenous Protestant church in the country. The chapter also focuses on the difficulties involved in translating the Bible into the Cantonese language and the dramatic stories of Bible colporteurs of indigenous and western colporteurs in China and the persecution that they suffered preaching the Christian gospel in a non-Christian country.
