In addition to providing classroom instruction, the traditional college offers a set of experiences and opportunities that are built on the premise that they just might alter a life trajectory. The bundle of services offered by most campus-based universities retains great value for traditional-aged college students. In addition to instruction, which is the primary activity of a college or university, all students in traditional institutions use a substantial portion of the bundle that is provided. Most students do not use all parts of the bundle, but all have the option. For many the option proves crucial to their future. To explain the role of the bundle at contemporary residential colleges and universities, this chapter explores three specific components: counseling, undergraduate research, and intercollegiate athletics.

Keywords:   college bundle, counseling, undergraduate research, option value, intercollegiate athletics, NCAA
