This chapter provides an introduction to the reception of Jonathan Edwards’s publications in the eighteenth-century transatlantic world. Factors such as legitimate and spurious editions are discussed, as well as the importance of the place of publication, particularly as a matter of copyright protection. The chapter details the difference that the considerable variety of formats, prices, and print runs had on readership, touching on the ways in which waves of evangelical awakening affected the reception of Edwards’s writings. It is argued that all these factors must be considered when thinking about the popularity of particular works by Edwards and other eighteenth-century authors.
