Polarization is growing. While demographics are seen as important, this book argues that the fundamental political conflict in America is over how much individuals can and should be held responsible for the course of their life. Republicans believe that individuals succeed or fail largely based on their own talents and efforts, while Democrats believe that many individuals are negatively affected by forces beyond their control and therefore lack the opportunity to achieve and succeed.
