(p.189) Chapter 8 Managing in the Midst of Social Disaster

Drawing upon ethnographic work in a poor neighborhood in Buenos Aires, this chapter develops a typology of poor people’s responses to interpersonal violence. It describes different ways in which residents cope with and confront surrounding danger: individualized and collective responses, violent and non-violent ones. Despite residents’ claims about the paralyzing effects of violence, the article unearths a variety of strategies. These, the article argues, should be understood in a context of generalized insecurity and lack of state instutions.
