Robert Frank’s book of photographs The Americans presented a different face to the nation. He showed the ennui of middle-class Americans while suggesting also in his photographs how African Americans might somehow transcend it. The landscape that he depicted was mean, warped by violence and fear. He refused traditional photographic practice, opting instead to shoot from the hip, without worries about blurriness and slanted horizon lines. Soon after publishing his book, Frank took his vision into film, making the madcap Pull My Daisy, with Allen Ginsberg appearing in it and Jack Kerouac doing the narration.
