This chapter describes how the breadth of L2 learners’ vocabulary changes in various instructional contexts. The chapter starts with the presentation and evaluation of various instruments that are used to assess vocabulary size. Further sections describe patterns of longitudinal change and the rate of development of the size of recall and recognition vocabulary. The chapter also examines how these developmental patterns differ in instructed foreign language learning contexts and in immersion settings in the target language environment, and how the success and rate of learning are influenced by the characteristics of the words to be acquired. The research findings presented in this chapter suggest that the size of L2 learners’ vocabulary develops incrementally and nonlinearly and that there are periods when vocabulary knowledge can fluctuate and be characterized by both attrition and growth.
