A critical survey of many of the issues discussed and the positions advocated in the literature on the aesthetics of nature of the last thirty or so years, with particular attention being given to the contributions of Allen Carlson. Topics covered include the idea of aesthetics of engagement, environmental formalism, nature's expressive qualities, the objectivity or relativity of aesthetic judgements about nature, and models of nature appreciation. I argue that none of the proposed models of the appropriate aesthetic appreciation of nature is adequate and that the search for such a model is a chimerical quest.

Keywords:   aesthetics of engagement, Carlson, environmental formalism, expressive qualities, formalism, nature, models of appreciation
