The division between the East and West in the Church is brilliantly carried forth in the West in the work of Thomas Aquinas. By reaching for a conception of theology as scientia and by privileging the concept of divine revelation over scripture, Aquinas incorporated epistemic conceptions of scripture into the hard‐drive of the Church. Revelation displaced soteriology as primary in the life of the Church. The canonical heritage was refigured as a combination of scripture and tradition to reflect this revolution. Once he was canonized as the teacher par excellence, his epistemology was given a privileged position in the Roman Catholic Church.
