The Church of the first millennium assembled a complex canonical heritage of materials, practices, and persons. Minimally these involved various lists or canons of doctrine, scripture, saints, bishops, Fathers and teachers, ecclesial regulations, icons, and liturgy. These functioned together to initiate new believers into the life of faith, together they operated as a complex network of means of grace. While they mediated special divine revelation, they were not reducible to such revelation.
