Discusses and describes trends in union membership as a starting point of a study on trade unions behaviour. Using data from the DUES (Development of Unions in European Societies) project, the study deals with the recent decline in union power, union members' choices, and the main (cyclical, structural, and institutional) factors explaining membership trends.
