A Vindication of Hume's Scheme
Hume's distinction of natural virtues and artificial virtues grows out of his explanatory scheme. But the distinction seems well founded and shows a puzzle in Aristotle's account of the virtues. Hume's account of the artificial virtues is in outline convincing and has the effect of qualifying his title to be a straightforward ‘virtue theorist’.
