Discusses the uses of learning in the Carolingian period of the Frankish Church. There are six sections. These look at: Lupus, Abbott of Ferrières, in the Gâtinais (Sens) who was a classical scholar born around 805; scholarship in relation to the Bible and the liturgy — the biblical scholars Hraban Maur (Hrabanus in Latinized form, born in 780 in Mainz), Walahfrid Strabo (‘the squinter’, born around 809 in the neighbourhood of the great monastery of Reichenau in Lake Constance and a scholar in the mould of Hraban), and Amalar of Metz (the most distinguished of the liturgists of the 9th century); collective learning in the courts and centres east of the Rhine; collective learning in the courts and centres west of the Rhine; deviation and exploration; and the vernacular literature.
