Both natural curiosity and practical concerns fuel our desire for true belief, i.e., knowledge (in a weak sense). The value of true belief can trumped by other values, but it is of special concern to epistemology. Many writers and contemporary movements (social constructivism, postmodernism, pragmatism) repudiate realist truth as a viable criterion of epistemic phenomena. This chapter responds to six criticisms of truth‐based epistemology, criticisms that appeal to a consensus theory of truth, the social construction of facts, the alleged unknowability of truth, and the denial of epistemic privilege.
