Demonstrates that most moments, aspects, or beliefs associated with the work concept was either absent or understood differently prior to the late eighteenth century. It argues that the moments of the work concept did not function together in such a way as to give the concept institutional centrality. It shows, further, how the extra‐musical and functional understanding of music pervaded every level of practice. Issues such as reception, occasional music, composers’ involvement in performances, ownership of musical material, musical publication, and notation are explored in their pre‐1800 settings.
