This chapter surveys the current thinking on social capital, with an eye to the challenges organizations face in promoting its creation and preservation. It explores the ways virtual communication technologies help address these challenges, while introducing new challenges of their own. A case from Ace Hardware Company is presented as an example of how companies are using virtual technologies to create, maintain, and exploit their social capital.
