Christians have their own language for the rituals they use including the word “sacrament”, the Christian term for their most important rituals. This chapter explains the role that Jesus plays for Christians in their lives and in their rituals, and what Christians mean when they say that Jesus “saves” them. It explains how the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus and his continued presence in the community of Christians gives meaning to their ritual activity through what Christians term “grace”. Five elements present in all Christian rituals are introduced: hermeneutic of experience, maturation, presence, service, and friendship.
