In rejecting the Protestant doctrine of justification by grace alone, the Counter‐Reformation reinforced the necessity of good works as the means toward salvation. This led women mystics to develop elaborate expressions of devotion to the Eucharist and Christ's Passion and even to miraculously receive the stigmata. Further, as belief in purgatory grew, the mystics assumed responsibility for interceding for the tormented souls, and they looked to the Virgin Mary as their own protector and mother. Visions abounded that may have been caused by dissociative disorder developed in childhood, physical and mental illness, and sleep deprivation.
