The accounts of death and burial (Genesis 49 and 50 respectively) are essentially positive. The death is dominated by a blessing; the burial by haunting beauty. Jacob's blessing (Genesis 49) distills much of Genesis and so, despite its archaic language, is best seen as composed at the same time as the book. The contrast between the burials of Jacob and Joseph (in Genesis 50) has echoes in the contrast between the fates of Elijah and Elisha (2 Kings 2 and 13).
