(p.30) IV Toward a Double Life
Democrat and Diplomat

Robert Dallek

Oxford University Press

This chapter focuses on William Dodd's involvement in public affairs, from the time he returned to the United States in November 1899 to the summer of 1905, when he had been greatly excited by the spirit and content of growing reform movements in all parts of the country. It considers Dodd's endorsement of the progressive programs and the progressives' belief that such reforms could only be achieved by destroying political machines and bringing back popular control. It also looks at Dodd's residence in Virginia, his advocacy of academic freedom, and the invitation he received to dine with Theodore Roosevelt at the White House.
