This chapter presents oral history interviews with two former nuns who chose to leave the confines of the monastery to pursue other endeavors: Theresa Padovano, who made a transition from community life in a large convent in Leavenworth, Kansas, to family life in the hilly suburbs of northern New Jersey; and Jane Flaherty, who left the Roman Catholic Church to become a priest in the Episcopal Church, and later a rector at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, Virginia. The narratives capture the women's experiences over the past fifty years, beginning in the 1960s.
