Courtship and Marriage

Courtship and Marriage

(p.117) Chapter Seven Courtship and Marriage

Eric Frederick Jensen

Oxford University Press

This chapter describes Robert Schumann's courtship and marriage to Clara Wieck. Schumann had to deal with Clara's father, Friedrich Wieck, who did his best to prevent their marriage. Wieck believed that all of the efforts he had made on his daughter's behalf would be wasted since most female pianists did not continue their career after marriage. He threatened to shoot Schumann and banned him from his home. Wieck and his daughter left for a series of concert tours, which separated her from Schumann for nearly eighteen months. However, Clara and Schumann managed to continue to communicate with each other despite their separation.
