This chapter explores the influence of the social and political environment on police and policing in France between 1870 and 1914. It discusses the impact of regime change, purges, and reforms on the police and gendarmerie, from the establishment of the Third Republic to the belle époque. It also examines policing within the context of nationalism, class, and religious conflict. Finally, it considers the impact of political violence and quasi-insurrectional politics, social divisions, and intense feelings of insecurity on French police and policing.
