This chapter focuses on the modernisation of the police and gendarmerie in France since 1870, with emphasis on reforms aimed at adapting the policing system to new social and criminal problems. It begins with an overview of modernisation initiatives during the period 1890–1914, including the establishment of a training school for all police recruits and the introduction of new techniques as well as the ‘police scientifique’. It then examines efforts to strengthen policing at the national level before concluding with an analysis of the outcome of modernisation.
