Blessing of the Deacon’s Orarion and Sticharion by the priest:

Εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεὸς ἡμῶν πάντοτε νῦν καὶ ἀεί καὶ εἰς τοὠς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. ἀμήν‎.1

Blessed be our God, now and forever, and to ages of ages. Amen.

The sticharion

Ἀγαλλιάσεται ἡ ψυχή μου ἐπὶ τῷ Κυρίῳ. ἐνέδυσε γάρ με ἱμάτιον σωτηρίου, καὶ χιτῶνα εὐ𝜙ροσύνης περιέβαλέ με, ὡς νυμ𝜙ίῳ περιέθηκέ μοι μίτραν, καὶ ὡς νύμ𝜙ην κατεκόσμησέ με κόσμῳ‎.2

My soul rejoices in the Lord, for he has clothed me in the mantle of salvation. He has also put on me the robe of good cheer; like a bridegroom he has crowned me with a garland and like a bride he has adorned me with ornament (Isaiah 61: 10).

The epimanikia

[Right]: Ἡ δεξιά σου χεὶρ Κύριε δεδόξασται ἐν ἰσχύι, ἡ δεξιά σου χεὶρ Κύριε ἔθραυσεν ἐχθρούς καὶ τῷ πλήθει τῆς δόξης σου συνὲτριψας τοὠς ὑπεναντίους‎.3

Your right hand, O Lord, is exalted in might; your right hand, O Lord, has shattered your enemies, and by the fullness of your glory, you have crushed your opponents (Exodux 15: 6–7).

[Left]: Αἱ χεῖρὲς σου ἐποίησάν με καὶ ἔπλασάν με· συνὲτισόν με καὶ μαθήσομαι τάς ἐντολάς σου‎.4

(p.288) Your hands have made me and fashioned me. Instruct me that I may learn your commandments (Psalm 118/119: 73).

The epitrachelion

Εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ἐκχὲων τὴν χάριν αὑτοῦ ἐπὶ τοὠς ἱερεῖς αὑτοῦ ὡς μύρον ἐπὶ κεγαλῆς, τὸ καταβαῖνον ἐπὶ πώγωνα, τὸν πώγωνα τοῦ Ἀαρών, τὸ καταβαῖνον ἐπὶ τὴν ὤαν τοῦ ἐνδύματος αὐτοῦ‎.5

Blessed be God who pours out his grace upon his priests like balm upon the head, which flows down onto the beard, the beard of Aaron, which flows even to the hem of his garment (Psalm 132/133: 2).

The zone

Εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεὸς ὁ περιζωννύων με δύναμιν, καὶ ἔθετο ἄμωμον τὴν ὁδόν μου‎.6

Blessed be God, who girds me with strength and makes my way blameless (Psalm 17/18: 32).

The epigonation

Περίζωσαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν σου ἐπὶ τὸν μηρόν σου δυνατέ· τῇ ὡραιότητί σου καὶ τῷ κάλλει σου καὶ ἔντεινε καὶ κατευοδοῦ καὶ βασίλευε ἕνεκεν ἀληθείας καὶ πρᾳότητος καὶ δικαιοσύνης, καὶ ὁδηγήσει σε θαυμαστῶς ἡ δεξιά σου. πάντοτε, νῦν καὶ ἀεί, καὶ εἰς τοὠς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. ἀμήν‎.7

Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one; in your loveliness and beauty stretch forth and prosper and reign for the sake of truth and gentleness and justice, and may your right hand lead you wondrously. Always, now and for ever, and to ages of ages. Amen (Psalm 44/45: 3-4).

The phelonion or the sakkos

Οἱ ἱερεῖς σου Κύριε ἐνδύσονται δικαιοσύνην καὶ οἱ ὃσιοί σου ἀγαλλιάσει άγαλλιάσονται. πάντοτε, νῦν καὶ ἀεί, καὶ εἰς τοὠς αἰῶνας τῶν αἱώνων. ἀμήν‎.8

(p.289) Your priests, O Lord, will be clothed in righteousness, and your holy ones will rejoice with joy. Always, now and for ever, and to ages of ages. Amen. (Psalm 131/132: 9).

The omophorion

Ἐπὶ τῶν ὤμων Χριστέ τὴν πλανηθεῖσαν ἄρας φύσιν, ἀναληφθεὶς τῷ Θεῷ καὶ Πατρὶ προσήγαγες‎.9

Having raised upon your shoulders, O Christ, our nature that had strayed, you presented it to God the Father (Troparion of Ode 7, Kanon for Matins of the Ascension of Christ).10

52. Epitrachelion with saints under arches

LOCATION: Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, Elizabeth Day McCormick Collection, Inv. No. 43.338

DIMENSIONS: 116 x 20 cm, cut down in the center section

DATE: Second half of the fifteenth century

ICONOGRAPHY: Deesis, although the central figure, presumably a bust of Christ, has been lost. The surviving arches frame the Mother of God and John the Baptist, SS Peter and Paul, John Chrysostom and Basil, Gregory and Athanasios, Nicholas and Cyril of Alexandria.

INSCRIBED: A narrow band between the ornamental fields on the (proper) right side of the stole bears what is likely an inscription, but a transcription has not been published, nor can it be read from photographs.

ORNAMENT: The standing figures are framed under cusped arches, although their summits are truncated by the intervening bands of ornament separating the registers. The arches are depicted as linear bands, springing from basket capitals atop simple, but solid, columns. The column bases are of rather massive form, like small hillocks. The registers are separated alternately by rows of lozenges or roundels formed by intertwining embroidered (p.290) bands. These frame four-petalled flowers in their centers. Similar floral motifs are deployed in the spandrels of the arches and sprinkled in the backgrounds of the figures . The ends of the stole have two distinct fields of ornament. The first and upper one is broader, and is formed as a pattern of intersecting lozenges with small floral motifs. The lower, narrower band shows a single, central lozenge containing a Hercules knot. Small floral motifs occupy the corners of the field.
